Medicare Liason Report

New Resources at Your Fingertips

Alfred H. Moffit, Jr., MD - Medicare Representative

The Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee met in Orlando on June 4, 2008. We reviewed four different policies and gave our recommendations. The only one of real interest to us is "The Gene Expression Profiling Panel for use in the management of breast cancer treatment." The problems of insurance restriction were expressed as was the fact that this maybe used to decide if chemotherapy or other adjuvant therapy should be used with surgery, as these patients may be unlikely to experience recurrences if the gene expression is negative.

There is also a new CD put out by the CMS titled Medicare Physician Guide: A Resource for Residents, Practicing Physicians, and Other Health Care Professionals. This can be obtained by going to the CMS "Medicare Learning Network," or First Coast Service Options, Inc. (Our Medicare administrator for Florida.) You can also obtain a very nice and useful wheel of all the important CMS websites and their official CMS addresses to log on and review. This is also offered at the Medicare Learning Network or FCSO (Florida Medicare).Florida Blue Cross/Blue Shield is still waiting to hear if it has been awarded the new Medicare contract for Traditional Medicare for Region 9 (Florida). And, lastly, just as Blue Cross/Blue Shield is waiting to hear if it has been given a job, we as physicians are still waiting to see if we can afford to keep our doors open or if we will get a 10.1% reduction in fees. Let's hope Congress will see the wisdom of keeping good healthcare available to the 65 years and older group.
