The President's ReportProgress on All Fronts => Spring 2007James W. Orr, MD, FACOG, FACS
This spring has been an exciting period for FOGS leadership, who have been attempting to monitor and offer advice and input to legislators as they have addressed a variety of critical issues concerning Florida's OB/GYN community. Members of our society have been extremely active in Tallahassee, directly speaking to numerous legislative leaders and offering testimony on such matters as fetal alcohol syndrome, HPV, and proposed law-enforcement notification of pregnant minors. As Florida's lawmakers struggle with these and other difficult questions, FOGS input is essential because our branch of medicine directly intersects the lives of women and families like no other. FOGS leadership will be discussing a number of possible options in an effort to formally strengthen and deepen our legislative impact. Such programs may include the development of local key contacts that would allow us to assist you to affect women's health care in your community with your legislators. In addition to legislative activities, FOGS connects with and maintains a relationship with many other health care related organizations. We maintain our active representation in the Florida Medical Association, have participated in the Governor's Women's Health Strategic Planning meeting, spoken before the national Women in Government coalition, and FOGS converses regularly with industry partners and other patient organizations who seek expert input on critical interest areas relating to the women of Florida. It remains our intent to position this Society as the thought leader for women's health issues in the state. On another front, exhaustive preparations for this year's annual meeting are nearly complete. By now all members should have received the final program. This year's event, titled, Women and Families at the Forefront of our Practice, will explore the depth and breadth of our profession, and include expert debates that you'll surely find informative. We've worked to assemble national and regional thought leaders who will relate the current state of novel and promising therapies, and weigh in on controversies providing the needed clarity to assist you in day-to-day care. We will have a didactic and lab focus on breast disease, a high-risk area of practice in the Ob/Gyn community. A special feature will be a satellite dinner program on Friday evening offered by the Florida Section of ACOG on all aspects of HPV, a timely topic for all of us. Plan to come early and attend this special event. Feel free to review all of the meeting details available on the FOGS website at www.flobgyn.org. And lastly, at about the time you read this, you will receive your copy of our annual membership directory. Please take a moment and check your personal entry. Membership is our lifeblood. It is the only way we connect as a community dedicated to the interest of our patients. Remember: You can make a difference! I am humbled and honored to have had this opportunity to serve as your President and I hope to see all of you in Naples this August. |
