Hot Summer Forecast for FOGS => Summer 2003

Spurgeon W. McWilliams, M.D.

Spurgeon McWiliams

All year, as your president, it seems I’ve had one eye focused on our upcoming annual meeting, and the other focused on tort reform. I had anticipated that by now, with our meeting in August at Sawgrass just weeks away, I would have the luxury of focusing exclusively on the meeting. Guess what? At this writing, the legislature may still be meeting on the malpractice issue; and may be doing so even as we meet for the Annual Meeting. Fortunately, plans for the meeting are complete, and it is one you won’t want to miss. In addition to presenting a strong academic program and a most enjoyable social agenda, our meeting serves as a most effective forum for the presentation of ideas and information by you, the membership of FOGS, to your leadership. Your input, of course, gives us the direction we need to continue our efforts to improve the climate for the practice of medicine in our state.

Needless to say, we need your continued activism on the tort reform issue until the governor signs a bill. Frustration, or perceived lack of progress, is not justification for diminished effort on our part. Our commitment should be no less than that of Governor Jeb Bush, who has promised to call these fellas back into special sessions all summer, until the issue facing us is effectively resolved.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have supported our initiatives over the past year. Particularly I’d like to thank Chris Seymour and his staff for their preparation for our annual meeting, and thank Amy Young and Task Force Chairman (and incoming FOGS president), Dr. Bob Yelverton for their work in the area of tort reform. It has been an exciting and challenging year to serve as your president. See you at Sawgrass!
