Tort Reform Takes Canter Stage => Spring 2003

Spurgeon W. McWilliams, M.D.

Spurgeon McWiliams

Finally, the long awaited legislative session, where the tort reform issue gets center stage for discussion, and hopefully for resolution, has begun. I would like to thank all FOGS members for the effort you gave to make tort reform a center stage issue. The real battle, however, is just beginning. Unlike the Academy Awards, "just being nominated" in this area is of no value. We’ve got to win! And with appropriate effort, I believe we can.

I would like to thank those of you who took the time to participate in our Legislative Day program, and to thank Amy Young for making it happen. I felt our meetings with House Speaker Johnnie Byrd and Insurance Commissioner Gallagher were very positive. Our meeting with Senate President Jim King was helpful as an indicator of work yet to be done.

Recently, our focus has been on the FMA Doctor’s Rally at the Capital on March 27th Many FOGS members and staff attended this event. Please continue to meet with all members of your local delegation during the session, and urge their support of tort reform. Remember to send your contribution to the FMA in support of the rally event even if you did not attend. There appears to be strong support in this, however, we need to keep working with the Senate. The strength and effectiveness of any legislation passed will be closely reflective of our level of participation.

The program for our Annual Meeting is virtually complete. Whether you’ve attended a recent FOGS meeting or not— please plan to attend this one. The program themed "The Practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the High Risk Era—A Practical Approach" will focus on risk reduction strategies, as well as practice enhancement strategies.

We have fashioned an outstanding scientific program, a refreshing social program for you and your family, and will offer all mandated courses.

I look forward with great anticipation to seeing you in Tallahassee on March 27th, and at Sawgrass on August 1st.
