Make a Difference: Spring 2002

Gary W. Devane, M.D.

As things seem to be slowly returning to normal, I am pleased to report that the Florida Obstetric and Gynecologic Society is continuing with our efforts to promote women's health care issues in our state. Although the 2002 Florida legislative session was bogged down with reapportionment and tax reform issues, our lobbyist, Amy Young, has carefully monitored health care issues relevant to our specialty as outlined in her legislative report.

The Executive Committee has recently started to develop a strategic plan for our society. We will have a final document for presentation at the annual meeting. I would appreciate your input regarding these matters. Briefly, we identified several goals to improve our mission to advance the practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology in our state. These relate to enhancing the value of membership, ensuring sound fiscal policy and improving our political and legislative activity. Many issues have been addressed regarding the role of FOGS in the 21st Century.

One means of improving communication to the membership has been our web site: (www.flobgyn.org). This was partially funded by ACOG matching funds to support legislative issues in our state. Since the legislative day was cancelled, funds were available allowing for us to update legislative issues on the web site on a regular basis. Please take the time to view this resource and let us know what you think. I'm still very interested in pursing opportunities to form closer relationships with our many regional OB-GYN societies. Certainly the posting of local societies membership rosters, officers and meeting times and places would seem an appropriate use of this site.

You will be receiving a brochure soon detailing our annual meeting to be held at the Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Studios Orlando. This is a luxury location that is child friendly. We have a stellar faculty and great program arranged including a show Swing band. Be sure to save the weekend of July 26-28 for an unforgettable meeting.

Recently, one of Central Florida's most respected general surgeons has chosen to retire, for many reasons, but especially because of dramatically increased malpractice insurance premiums. We are now in the midst of a "hardening of the insurance industry market" and many professional liability insurance carriers have left the Florida market. FOGS has a solid relationship with FPIC, including discounts for our members. I believe that this is a very important benefit of membership. Please contact our management office or call Patrick Ellis, our liaison at FPIC, for more information (FOGS office 904-998-0853, FPIC 800-741-FPIC).

Finally, please encourage your partners or colleagues to consider joining or rejoining FOGS. Our membership support directly relates to the "clout" we have with other specialty societies and our political influence in Tallahassee. We do make a difference.
