Amy J. Young appointed to the Governor's Council on Physical FitnessMay 04, 2007
Amy Young, a long-time legislative advocate for health care issues, was appointed by Governor Charlie Crist to the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness. Ms. Young, a governmental consultant with Smith & Ballard, brings a unique perspective to the Council with over twenty years of experience representing clients in the health care arena before the Florida Legislature and Cabinet. Ms. Young was appointed for a term beginning May 4, 2007, and ending at the pleasure of the Governor. Other members of the Council include: Derrick Brooks professional football player, Tampa Bay Buccaneers; Jennifer Capriati, Olympic gold medalist and professional tennis player; Shaquille O'Neal, professional basketball player, Miami Heat Rocco Baldelli, professional baseball player, Tampa Bay Devil Rays; Bob Griese, Hall of Fame quarterback and former professional football player, Miami Dolphins; Ken Griffey Jr., professional baseball player, Cincinnati Reds; Corey Simon, professional football player, Indianapolis Colts. Department of Health Secretary Ana Viamonte Ros serves by virtue of her position as the State Surgeon General Governor Crist signed Executive Order 07-52 on March 26, 2007, creating the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness. The council is charged with developing a state plan of action to increase Floridians’ level of physical fitness through regular exercise and sound nutritional practices. They will also review the implementation of daily physical education for elementary school students and examine the availability of appropriate physical education for students in grades 6-12. The Governor's goal is to reduce the number of Floridians who suffer from chronic diseases resulting from obesity within the next 10 years. |
