New Preventive Care Benefits for Medicare Patients

New preventive health care benefits took effect on January 1, 2005 for medicare beneficiaries. Government and Public Health officials urge physicians to increase medicare patient awareness about these new preventive benefits, which can help save lives and money. A summary of new benefits is below.

"Welcome to Medicare" Physical Examination

  • New Medicare Part B beneficiaries whose coverage begins on or after January 1, 2005 are eligible for this one-time preventive physical exam.
  • Exam includes patient review of health, education and counseling on health conditions, necessary screenings and shots, and referrals for other care.
  • This exam is only available within the first six months of new coverage.

Cholesterol and Diabetes Screenings

  • Medicare now covers one cholesterol screening every five years for beneficiaries.
  • Diabetes screenings are also now available to at-risk beneficiaries. Dependent on risk factors, beneficiaries may be eligible for up to two screenings per year.
  • Diabetes treatment supplies, including glucose monitors, test strips and lancets are also be covered through medicare. Beneficiaries pay 20% of the medicare-approved amount after their yearly Part B deductible.
