The Crisis, The Leadership and Advocacy Efforts of the SocietyChristopher R. Seymour, Executive Director The advocacy of the membership issues remains one of FOGS’ top strengths. Our presence in Tallahassee by our lobbyist Amy Young and the efforts of the leadership to deliver key messages to the legislature and the media have been impressive and have heightened the plight of our member practices in the mind of the public. Rest assured that our presence in Tallahassee and continued diligence on issues other than the malpractice crisis remains high as many of our opponents are seeking to take advantage of the malpractice focus to pass scope of practice bills and other bills not in the interest of our practices and the Ob-Gyn patient. Please look over the myriad of issues before the legislature in Ms. Young’s article, presented in this newsletter. We are fully on board with the national tort reform efforts of ACOG and the position statement of the Florida Chairman, Paul Gluck (see web link http://www.flobgyn.org/news/news2108.php), the efforts of the Florida Medical Association, and the Coalition to Heal Florida’s Healthcare. FOGS members have also responded to Dr. McWilliams and the FMA’s appeal for funds and sent thousands of dollars to People for A Better Florida, participated at rallies, and talked to their patients frankly about the crisis. Together with the federation of specialty societies, counties and ACOG we are ardently pushing for the $250,000 cap and the complete legislative package for reform nationally and statewide. Compromise is not in our interest! Although ACOG has been presenting the lion’s share of data and information to the media, the Society offices have been inundated for supporting facts, figures and policy relating to the crisis and the leadership has been asked to appear on local media to address the crisis. FPIC and NICA have been helpful. In addition, the office sent out a survey to the membership about the crisis and we received 85 responses the first week, which we tabulated for your review below. These tabulations show that the effects of the crisis are dramatic and will deepen unless resolved. Lastly, please make no mistake, we are recommending that our members maintain malpractice insurance when feasible. When it is not, we have provided several tools on our website to help members deal more directly with this crisis.
