Vice-Chairman's MessagePaul A. Gluck, M.D. Under the leadership of Dr. Al Moffett, Florida has become one of the most active Sections in the most active District in ACOG. Dr. Moffett plans to stay actively involved with ACOG as a candidate for District IV Treasurer. I wish him Godspeed and will count on his sage counsel during my term as Florida Section Chair.
In addition to being recognized with the National Wyeth-Ayerst Award for the best Section project, our depression screening initiative continues. We were one of four sections to receive a Federal Maternal Child Health Grant. This grant will promote collaboration with the State Department of Health to engage more providers in the private and public sectors in depression screening and treatment. A Florida Summit on depression in women is being scheduled for Spring 2003. Working with the Department of Health, we are planning a multi-disciplinary meeting, hosted by the University of South Florida in Tampa. This will be an opportunity to learn from and network with others interested in the identification and treatment of depression in women. Watch for future announcements and plan to attend. Dr. Ed Carney, our incoming Vice-Chair, is frequently lauded for his work in gathering maternal mortality statistics. In addition, Ed will soon be launching the next Florida Section project addressing cardiovascular disease in women. Stay tuned and stay involved. Dr. Jay Trabin, our Florida Secretary-Treasurer elect, will continue to closely monitor our finances to make sure that we have the resources for future section initiatives to help us and our patients. The AMA and the ACOG have designated the current professional liability crisis as their highest priority issue. This crisis of availability and affordability is the worst I have witnessed in my 26-year career. Obstetricians and gynecologist in Florida, especially Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, stand at the epicenter of this crisis. Dr. Tom Young has been a tireless champion of insurance and Tort reform. Dr. Karen Harris spoke at the ACOG press conference in Los Angeles for the launch of the “Red Alert” public relations campaign. Now more then ever, these leaders need our help! Help our patients understand the gravity of the situation with “Red Alert” information available from ACOG. Contact your congressman and senators to lobby for HB 4600, Tort reform legislation. Participate in FMA sponsored events. I believe that the crisis has become so severe that we now have the opportunity for significant change to bring some sanity to the tort system. As a Section, we can take pride in our many accomplishments and look forward to new challenges. Thanks for your confidence in electing me as your chairman and for your continued support. |
