2006 Annual District IV Meeting

Shelley Holmstrom, MD
ACOG Florida Section
Junior Fellow Advisor

The Annual District IV Meeting was held at the Breakers Resort in beautiful Palm Beach, Florida, in late October. This year's scientific program was outstanding as always, and it was chaired by Dr. Haywood Brown of Duke University. Dr. Nancy Gaba of George Washington University presented a wonderful and inspiring lecture on mentorship as the winner of the Donald F. Richardson Outstanding Faculty award sponsored by the junior fellows of District IV. The District IV junior fellow advisory committee enjoyed an enlightening presentation by Dr. Jeffery Wilkinson from Duke University about his experiences with female genital fistula repairs in Africa.

Six junior fellows presented their original research as part of the program. Congratulations to the following winners:

First prize: Concentration of Mercury in Placentae of Pregnant Women in Jamaica.
Trevor Potter, MD - University of the West Indies
     Kingston, Jamaica

Second prize: Why are Fewer Medical Students in Florida Choosing Obstetrics and Gynecology?
Aaron Deutsch, MD - University of South Florida
     Tampa, Florida

ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting
The Annual Clinical Meeting (ACM) is scheduled for May 5 to 9 in San Diego, California. A number of programs are geared toward junior fellows and medical students attending this meeting. A "Business of Medicine" course will be offered again this year for junior and young fellows about to enter practice. All junior fellows are encouraged to attend the junior fellow business meeting and breakfast on the morning of Tuesday, May 8. The business meeting is followed by the "Stump the Professors" session at 9:30 am, in which a panel of experts in our field will attempt to decipher perplexing cases as presented by four junior fellows. A more casual president's dinner and dance is planned this year in honor of the current ACOG president, Dr. Douglas W. Laube. This event will be held on the aircraft carrier USS Midway, the longest-serving aircraft carrier in US Navy history and now home to the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum.

A medical student course is being offered to all medical students attending the ACM on Monday, May 7. Topics planned for this session include: "Ob/Gyn as a Career" and "What It Takes to Secure and Succeed in an Ob/Gyn Residency." A medical student reception will follow this course on the evening of May 7. A medical student lounge will also be provided, where medical students can drop by and speak to current Ob/Gyn residents. A residency fair for medical students is also planned for Tuesday, May 8. To date, 30 residency programs have signed up for this great opportunity.

Junior Fellow Essay Contest
The annual junior fellow contest, entitled this year, "The Ob/Gyn Physician-Patient Relationship-What it Means to Me" was a great success. District IV submitted 9 of the 81 total essays. The District IV winner was Dr. Millie Behera from Duke University. Look for future announcements regarding this year's contest. Submissions for this contest are typically due in late summer.

Medical Student Initiative
The annual John Gibbons medical student contest is slated to take place this spring. Look for announcements regarding this contest and encourage your medical students to apply. Two medical students will be awarded a travel stipend in order to attend an ACOG meeting this year.

Medical student admission to ACOG is free. Students can apply online at www.acog.org. The students can gain access to the members' side of the ACOG website and receive additional mailings from ACOG. District IV of ACOG has the most student members and the Florida section of ACOG had the most students members at last count. Keep up the great job with recruitment into our specialty.

District IV Junior Fellow Advisor
I am honored to announce that I have been selected as the next District IV junior fellow advisor. In this position, I will be able to attend all the District IV junior fellow meetings and assist with junior fellow district activities. I look forward to serving our section and district in this position.
