Stump the Professors
Start collecting interesting cases for the "Stump the Professors" session at the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting (ACM). The presentation is scheduled for Tuesday, May 8, 2007, 9:30–11:00 am during the ACM in San Diego, California. A 1-page summary of the case along with the final diagnosis is due by December 1, 2006. Online submissions are required. See the ACOG website (www.acog.org) under the Junior Fellow section for further details, or contact Chris Himes at chimes@acog.org.

District and Section Elections
Congratulations to the new District IV and Florida Section officers! ACOG national district elections were held in August. Florida's very own Cole Greves, MD (current Florida section junior fellow chair) of the Orlando Regional Medical Center training program was elected to the District IV junior fellow vice-chair position. He will be representing junior fellows from Florida plus 9 other sections in the southeast US, Puerto Rico and the West Indies at national ACOG functions.

In a runoff election held in September, Dr. Francisco Cruz-Pachano of the University of Miami residency program won the junior fellow vice-chair position for the Florida section of ACOG. Dr. Cruz-Pachano will assist the junior fellow chair of Florida, Dr. Loren Smarkusky, in representing junior fellows from Florida at District IV meetings.

Good luck to Cole and Francisco!

Preparing for Written and Oral Boards

An online presentation describing the timeline for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) written and oral boards is available on the ACOG website under the Junior Fellow section. The presentation is a brief overview of the process of applying and collecting cases for the oral examination. Two tracks are currently available for taking the oral examination to physicians who pass the written exam:

Traditional track: Practice for a year, collect cases for a year and take the exam the fall of year 3 post-residency
Accelerated track: Collect cases the first year after residency and take the exam the fall of year 2 post-residency

Both examinations (written and oral) require a written request for application to the examination. Be careful with keeping track of the deadlines (there are financial consequences for missing them). The ABOG web site (www.abog.org) is extremely helpful for keeping dates and deadlines straight. I personally took the accelerated track and am happy to share my experience with anyone. You can e-mail me at sholmstr@hsc.usf.edu.

Medical Student Initiative

ACOG continues to place an emphasis on recruitment of the best and brightest medical students to our specialty. Medical student membership to ACOG is free. Interested students can apply online at www.acog.org. At last check, Florida had the highest number of medical student members within District IV. Encourage your medical students to apply. Students can gain access to the member's side of the ACOG website and receive a limited number of ACOG publications.

The John Gibbons medical student award will be given to at least 2 students this spring to assist with travel to an ACOG meeting. Look for details by e-mail or upcoming newsletters. Encourage your medical students to apply. The 2 students awarded the stipend this year, Manny Herrera (MS IV) from FSU and Janelle Fauci (MS III) of USF, thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Interview season is fast approaching-offer to review a medical student's personal statement or CV.
