Florida Obstetric and Gynecologic Society Meeting
The annual FOGS meeting is at the Breakers hotel in Palm Beach from August 4 to 6. Resident research papers will be presented on Friday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. Last year, 5 of the 7 residency programs were represented at the research paper portion of the program. Residents and fellows can attend the FOGS meeting at no charge, but participants must fill out a registration application (paper or online at www.flobgyn.org) and provide proof of in-training status.

ACOG Annual District IV Meeting
This year the Annual District IV Meeting (ADM) is from Friday, October 27 to Sunday, October 29, also at the Breakers hotel in Palm Beach. Junior fellows are encouraged to submit abstracts for presentation at this meeting. Research abstracts are due by July 24, 2006 and can be submitted online at www.acog.org. The research papers are presented orally or in poster form. First, second and third place in the oral and poster categories are awarded monetary prizes.

The host section junior fellows (Florida, for this meeting) typically arrange for a junior fellow social hour. Do attend this event and help support the Florida junior fellow chair, Cole Greves, and vice chair, Loren Smarkusky. A junior fellow business meeting is held annually at the ADM for all junior fellows attending the meeting.

Medical Student Initiative
ACOG continues to prioritize medical student recruitment into the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology. Beginning in 2005, the John Gibbons Fund was founded to lend financial support to medical students to attend an AOCG meeting. This year Janelle Fauci (MS III) from the University of South Florida and Manny Herrera (MS IV) from Florida State University were selected to attend the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting in Washington, DC. Next spring another two students will be selected for this honor. Keep your medical students informed of this award.

Medical student membership to ACOG is free. Students can apply online or download an application and mail it to ACOG. Medical students receive a wide variety of ACOG mailings and are granted access to the members-only section of the ACOG website. District IV has the largest number of medical student members (612) and the Florida section has the largest number of student members in District IV (107!). Help keep the Florida medical student numbers high and encourage your medical students to apply for membership.

Interview season is quickly approaching for the upcoming 4th year medical students. Offer to help your students review their CV or personal statement.

Florida Section Elections
Each year a new junior fellow section vice chair of Florida is elected. Look for e-mail announcements this summer for the election. The position is actually for two years, as the vice chair becomes the Florida junior fellow section chair the following year. The position begins following the ADM each fall and requires attendance at two meetings a year: the interim junior fellow District IV meeting (typically at the national ACOG annual clinical meeting) and the annual District IV meeting.

Key contacts are needed at all seven residency programs in the state. If you are interested in this role, please contact Cole Greves or me.

Katrina Relief Book Fund
The Junior Fellow College Advisory Council initiated the Katrina Relief Book fund after the devastation the Louisiana and Mississippi residents experienced last fall. Many of these residents lost valuable textbooks and publications. Donations can be made by check or credit card. For more information, see the junior fellow portion of the ACOG website www.acog.org. any amount donated will help greatly.
