Medical Student Initiative

The John Gibbons Award was founded in 2005 to provide medical students an opportunity to travel to an ACOG meeting. The Florida section junior fellow officers held a contest to choose two medical students to represent the section at the Annual Clinical Meeting (ACM) in Washington, DC to be held from May 6–10, 2006. The two recipients are Janelle Fauci, a third year medical student from the University of South Florida in Tampa and Manny Herrera, a fourth year medical student from Florida State University in Tallahassee. These two students have been awarded a stipend to cover travel expenses to the ACM.

A special medical student course is being offered at the ACM this year, titled OB-GYN as a Career: Residency Training and Dimensions of Practice. This course is on Monday, May 8, 2006 from 1–5 pm at the Renaissance Washington Hotel.

A medical student reception is being held on Monday, May 8, 2006 at the Renaissance Washington Hotel, 999 9th St NW from 5:30–6:45 pm. All junior fellows attending the ACM are encouraged to drop by this reception and meet the interested medical students.

Florida Section Wyeth Resident Reporter Program

The Florida section of ACOG was one of six sections in District IV selected to send a resident to the Annual Clinical Meeting Wyeth Resident Reporter program. Brandon Locklear, MD, a second year resident at the Orlando Regional Medical Center program in Orlando, FL has been selected to represent the Florida section at the ACM as the Wyeth Resident Reporter. An outstanding educational program has been planned for the resident reporters. The reporters will also have the opportunity to learn a tremendous amount about ACOG.

District IV Resident Research Winner to be honored at ACM

Junior Fellow Shannon D. MacLaughlan, MD, from Greenville, SC is one of two recipients of the annual Donald F. Richardson Research award. She will present her original research paper titled, CYR 61 Expression in Normal and Abnormal Endometrium: A Marker of Estrogenic Activity during the Annual Clinical Meeting in May.
