ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting
The Annual Clinical Meeting (ACM) will be held in Washington, DC, May 6-10, 2006. Exciting new courses will be offered, including a medical student seminar and a "Business of Medicine" course. The medical student presentation is entitled, "Ob/Gyn as a Career: Residency Training and Dimensions of Practice" and will include two panel discussions by ob/gyn providers at a variety of stages in their careers. A medical student reception will be held Monday, May 8, 2006, 5:30-6:45 p.m. at the Renaissance Washington. Medical student registration for the ACM is free.
Several junior fellow activities at the ACM are planned as well. Stump the Professors is scheduled for Tuesday, May 9, 9:30-11 a.m., where four junior fellows will present interesting cases to a panel of four experts in ob/gyn. This presentation will be preceded by a junior fellow business meeting and breakfast. All junior fellows are invited to the Medical student reception on Monday, May 8.
Medical Student Recruitment
Recruitment of the best and brightest medical students to our field continues to be a priority of ACOG. The student membership category now offers free enrollment. Students can sign up at www.acog.org or by mail. Student membership more than tripled in the Florida section of ACOG from 2004 to 2005!
The John Gibbons Medical Student Award was created in May 2005 to enable medical students to travel to an ACOG meeting. This year, medical students from Florida State University, University of Florida, University of Miami and University of South Florida are encouraged to submit a 250-300 word statement conveying why they should be selected for this award. Two students will be granted $1,000 each for travel to the ACM in Washington, DC. Encourage your medical students to apply for this award. Submit statements to the current Junior Fellow Florida Section Chair, Cole Greves, MD (cgreves@cfl.rr.com). For more information, send e-mail to: student@acog.org.
Outstanding Faculty Award
Each spring the District IV Junior Fellow Advisory Council selects a physician who is a strong advocate for junior fellow involvement in ACOG. Donald G. Gallup, MD of Mercer University School of Medicine (Savannah campus) was chosen for the award in 2005. The recipient of this award is expected to give a lecture at the Annual District IV Meeting. If you know of a deserving candidate for 2006, please submit the physician’s name, a statement describing the physician’s involvement with junior fellows and the physician’s complete CV to Cole Greves, MD by March 1, 2006. The District IV Junior Fellow Advisory Council will vote on nominees in May at the ACM.
Resident Research Submissions for the ADM and Donald F. Richardson Award
Look for announcements regarding junior fellow abstract submissions for the Annual District IV Meeting (ADM) at the Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida, October 27-30, 2006. Abstracts are typically due by June 30. Junior fellows are invited to present original research material in either oral presentation or poster format. Cash prizes are given to first, second, and third place in both categories. The best oral presentation can then be submitted for consideration of the Donald F. Richardson award. The award is given annually to the two best papers from the ten ACOG districts. Recipients receive a $1,000 stipend plus an expense-paid trip to the ACM the following spring.
