Junior Fellow Column
ACOG Florida Section Junior Fellow Column => Summer 2005Shelley Holmstrom, MD I would like to introduce myself as the ACOG Florida Section Junior Fellow advisor. I also currently serve as the ACOG District IV Junior Fellow past chair. I recently moved from Savannah, Georgia to Florida last fall to take the position of Associate Professor of OB/GYN at the University of South Florida in Tampa. This column is designed to disseminate information to junior fellows regarding activities in Florida and District IV. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is comprised of ten districts. District IV has ten sections, including Florida and most of the southeastern coast. There are numerous opportunities to become involved in junior fellow activities at the section or district level. Junior Fellow Florida Section Vice Chair Elections this Summer Currently, Cole Greves, MD will assume the position of Junior Fellow Chair of the Florida section in July. He is an upcoming third year resident at the Orlando Regional Medical Center Program. Elections will be held this summer for the Junior Fellow Vice Chair of Florida. Please contact Cole or me if you are interested in this office. This position requires a two-year commitment and approximately two business meetings a year. Our next meeting will be held at the District IV meeting in Los Cabos, Mexico October 28-30. Junior Fellow Activities at the Florida OB/GYN Society Meeting Several activities are planned for the Annual Florida OB/GYN Society Meeting (FOGS) at the Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes in Orlando, July 22-24. Resident paper presentations of original research will take place on Friday, July 22 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. A junior social hour is also being planned, and complete information will be available on-site. Registration for the FOGS meeting is free to all Florida residents and fellows (proof of residency or fellowship is required). Please see the final program on pages 4-5 for the meeting times and locations for these events. For more information visit the FOGS website, www.flobgyn.org. To register, complete and return the registration form on page 6. ACOG Junior Fellow Activities The District IV Annual District Meeting will be held in conjunction with Districts III and IX in beautiful Los Cabos, Mexico October 28-30. Look for announcements regarding submission of original research for junior fellow oral presentations. Watch for announcements this fall for the second annual ACOG Junior Fellow essay contest. In 2004 our own Randy Fink, MD from Miami won the contest in District IV. This year, the contest will focus on mentorship and what inspired you to become an obstetrician/gynecologist. The deadline for essay entries is late November. Start collecting those interesting cases for the annual Stump the Professors contest held at the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting (ACM). The top four recipients of this award receive an expense paid trip to present the interesting cases at the ACM in Washington, DC, May 6-10, 2006. The deadline for submissions is early December. Get Involved in ACOG Be a key contact at your residency program. Key contacts serve to disseminate junior fellow material discussed at meetings and assist in junior fellow section elections. ACOG wants a junior fellow from each program in Florida to represent the seven residencies in the key contact program. Contact Cole or me to sign up for this vital role in ACOG. Be a medical student mentor. One of ACOG's top priorities is to attract more students to our specialty. Medical students can now join ACOG free of charge and submit applications online. Many medical students choose a specialty based on their third year clerkships. Demonstrating a positive attitude while at work and when teaching students can go a long way. Focus on the positive aspects of our specialtysurgical opportunities, continuity of care, exciting subspecialties. Share with students what attracted you to ob/gyn. |
