Annual Meeting Update => Summer 2007

Dr. Garney

I hope everyone has made plans to attend our annual state educational meeting this month at the Naples Grande Resort and Club on our beautiful west coast. Dr. Orr has constructed an educational and timely program that I know we will enjoy.

Our Florida Section Advisory Council will meet on Friday afternoon prior to the beginning of the educational program and discuss the business of the Section. A report will be given at the annual meting later that weekend, but most of the discussion will be done that afternoon. If you have items that you would like the College to address, this is one opportunity to give your input. Talk to your district advisory council member and she or he will bring this information to the meeting. District advisory council members give an overview report from their district at the meeting. The Florida State University College of Medicine will now send a representative to join the other educational representatives from the universities of Florida, Miami, and South Florida.

Leadership of the Florida Section changes every three years; 2008 will be our election year for the 2009–2011 cycle. The chairman of the Nominations Committee, Dr. Paul Gluck, will give a report at the annual business meeting of the committee recommendations.

Each year one or two section members attend the annual legislative meeting hosted by the College in Washington, DC. This meeting is structured as an educational event to help our Fellows learn basic lobbying techniques and be updated on the hot legislative topics for the year. Appointments are also made to visit with our own Senators and Representatives to present issues that are timely regarding women's health care. District IV and the Florida Section cover expenses. If you would like to be considered to attend this three-day meeting, please contact your advisory council representative.

Our District IV annual meeting will be held in Chicago, September 14–16 at the Hyatt Regency. Chicago is a vibrant city and top-flight entertainment, dining, and of course shopping will complement this excellent meeting! Plan now for a pleasant long weekend away from the office.

I will return to the history of our founding physicians for my next column. Sadly, few of these members are still with us. Consider having coffee with the most senior members of you department and hear what stories they tell about the early years.
