Summer 2002

Dear Colleagues,

Again, we find ourselves in the "Dog Days of Summer", and it is hot! Many things are warming up for the Florida Section of ACOG. We were awarded the Wyeth-Ayerst Section Award for our "Depression Screening Project". This award – a $5,000 check and a "Certificate of Award" - is given annually to the best ACOG section. We can use the money to help support the educational arm of our FOGS/ACOG meeting. Dr. Gluck and I received the award in Los Angeles, California at the Annual Clinical Meeting of ACOG on Sunday, May 5, 2002. I again want to thank everyone involved in this project- especially Drs. Ron Chez and Paul Gluck for their untiring contributions.

Dr. Moffett

Our own Charles Hammond, M.D. of District IV (Duke University) was made President of ACOG at the meeting in Los Angeles and I know he will do a great job. Of a more pressing nature is our support for Thomas Rowland, M.D., for the next President-Elect of ACOG. Dr. Rowland is another of our District IV native sons and deserves our support for his nomination.

I want to congratulate Dr. Penalver at the University of Miami for his best medical student OB/GYN Club in District IV. I would like to challenge the other medical schools in the state to take Penalver’s crown in friendly competition by encouraging more students into our field of medicine. I will be reporting on the numbers and each school and would like to support an award for the winner at the annual meeting next year.

Of a sadder note, we have had two of the pillars of our profession in District IV pass away in the recent months and we wish to acknowledge them for their years of service: David Nagey, M.D., of Maryland, and A. Cullen Richardson, M.D., of Georgia.

Finally, the annual District IV meeting is being held in Miami on October 19th - 21st, 2002. Dr. Penalver is the program chairman and Dr. Gluck is the local arrangements chairman. Knowing both of these men well, I am certain there will be much to be learned and fun to be had by all. I look forward to seeing everyone in Miami.
