Dear Colleagues,

The Annual Meeting of the District IV of ACOG was held October 27-29, 2001, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The meeting was at the Kingston Plantation with an outstanding academic program. Richard Green, M.D., District IV Chairman ran an outstanding meeting with Charles Hammond, M.D., as President-Elect of ACOG in attendance.

As all of us are feeling the pinch from increases in our malpractice rates - up 19% as of December 1, 2001 with FPIC - one needs to know that all states are experiencing the same situation. For instance, West Virginia's rates are increased up to 200%. Since almost 80% of the state's deliveries are Medicaid, most obstetricians are retiring or moving to neighboring states. The District's legislative has been helpful to resolve some of these problems with input from Albert Strunk, J.D., M.D., Vice President for Fellowship Activities at ACOG. The possibility of"going bare" is being considered in several other states in the District.

The District again has voted to support the Florida Section - "Depression in Women" project - for Wyeth-Ayerst Outstanding Section Project for all of ACOG. Paul Gluck, M.D., Ron Chez, M.D., and myself were very proactive in pushing the project again. We expect to win this year.

Dr. Moffett

The program was excellent with our own Mitchel S.Hoffman, M.D., from the University of South Florida speaking about hemorrhage in ob-gyn patients. Many excellent Junior-Fellow papers were presented including one by Randy A. Fink, M.D., from Miami and another by Peter McIlvean, M.D., from Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando.Hugh W. Randall, Jr., M.D., FACOG from Emory University School of Medicine received the District IV Junior Fellow Outstanding Faculty Award. The District's next annual meeting - October 18-21, 2002 - will be at the new Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Key Biscayne near Miami, Florida. Paul Gluck, M.D. is serving as the Local Arrangements Chairman.Michael Penalver, M.D., is the Program Chairman. Please come as this will be a great meeting and time. Further information about the meeting will be forthcoming.
